La Grande Guerre 1914 -1918
28th July 1914: Archduke François Ferdinand de Habsbourg, heir to the Austrian throne, is assassinated in Sarajevo.
1st August : Germany declares war on Russia, on 3rd August on France, and violates the neutrality of Belgium and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. Britain declares war on Germany on 4th August.
24th August 1914: invasion of the Ardennes.
6th - 12th September 1914: victorious battle of the Marne.
1915: Furious fighting in the Argonne region.
1916: The Crown Prince directs the Battle of Verdun from the Ardennes.
July 1918: Failure of the German offensive in the Champagne region.
September 1918: Allied offensive and start of the slow reconquest of the Ardennes.
10th to 11th November 1918: violent final combats in Vrigne-Meuse, where Augustin Trébuchon is the last soldier to be killed in the war.
